The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has issued a final reminder to its members regarding the completion of the Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credit hours for the calendar year 2024. The deadline for compliance was extended to June 30, 2025, providing a final window for members to fulfil the mandatory learning requirements and avoid consequential provisions.

CA Akhil Pachori wrote on X, “This mail is recd. by those who are non-compliant with CPE hours requirements for 2024 and are currently at Level I of Consequential provision containing in CPE Statement, 2023:

Members who fail to complete their CPE requirement by the end of calendar year 2024, are currently at level -I (till 30th June 2025) of non-compliance and due to non-compliance now members need to make up the shortfall by completing twice of the shortfall in CPE hours latest by 30th June 2025, in addition to the regular CPE hours requirement for 2025.”

Kindly note that the self-declaration for claiming ULA for the year 2024 has now been disabled. To ensure full compliance, members are required to undertake and declare ULA activity in the year 2025 only. Names of members who do not comply by 30th June 2025 ((i.e. by completing twice the shortfall of Calendar year 2024- for both Structured/ Unstructured Activities ) shall be classified under non-compliance status of Level-II from 1st July 2025, and this status will be reflected on the CPE Portalunder the member’s login until full compliance is achieved by member.”

Who Needs to Comply?

As per the ICAI guidelines, the following categories of members are required to complete 20 CPE credit hours during the calendar year:

  • Members aged less than 60 years not holding a Certificate of Practice (COP).
  • All members residing abroad, irrespective of whether they hold a COP.

The 20 hours can comprise either structured or unstructured learning, depending on the member's preference. These hours must be completed during the calendar year 2024, although the compliance window now allows completion until June 30, 2025.

The 40-Hour Requirement

While the minimum 20 CPE hours apply to specific non-practising members, most practising chartered accountants are required to complete 40 CPE credit hours annually, with a minimum of 20 hours through structured learning. This is crucial for maintaining their Certificate of Practice and staying updated with industry standards and changes.

Background of the Extension

Initially, the compliance deadline for CPE hours for the year 2024 was extended from December 31, 2024 to February 28, 2025. However, as part of its flexibility provisions, ICAI has now granted a further extension until June 30, 2025, specifically for the 2024 compliance period. This is to help members manage their learning obligations without undue hardship.

This extension was notified in continuation of the ICAI communication dated 30-12-2024.

New CPE Statement & Consequential Provisions

Under the CPE Statement, 2023, the ICAI has introduced consequential provisions for non-compliance applicable from calendar year 2024 onwards. For the first level of non-compliance (Level I), the defaulting members are granted an additional compliance window from January 1 to June 30 of the following year.

For this year only, the Level I grace period has been realigned from January 1–June 30 to March 1–June 30, 2025, to provide members adequate opportunity to complete their learning requirements.

What Happens If You Miss the Deadline?

Failure to comply with CPE requirements within the grace period may trigger Level II and higher consequential actions under the ICAI’s CPE policy. These may include:

  • Ineligibility for certain ICAI services
  • Loss of COP eligibility
  • Name appearing in the list of defaulting members

Final Takeaway

Chartered Accountants who haven’t completed their required CPE hours for the year 2024 must act immediately, as the final deadline is fast approaching—June 30, 2025, just 3 days away. This is the last opportunity to maintain compliance without facing penalties under the revised CPE policy.

Members are urged to log into the ICAI CPE portal and ensure their records are up to date. With only a short window left, timely completion of the required hours can help avoid serious consequences.
