84 Years of ITAT: Law Minister Arjun Meghwal and CJI B.R. Gavai Laud Tribunal’s Contribution to Tax Justice System

84 years have passed since the founding of The Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT). Since its establishment in 1941, the ITAT has formed the cornerstone of India’s tax justice framework, adjudicating more than 30 lakh appeals over the decades.

Esteemed dignitaries of India’s judiciary, legal fraternity and government came together to celebrate the anniversary of one of India’s oldest and most respected quasi-judicial institutions, with a National Symposium on “Income Tax Appellate Tribunal - Role, Challenges and Way Forward” at the Delhi High Court Auditorium.


The National Symposium highlighted the enduring contribution of the ITAT to India’s tax adjudication system and its continued evolution in adapting to new-age fiscal jurisprudence in the digital era.

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Law and Justice and Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, Arjun Ram Meghwal, felicitated the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice B.R. Gavai. The Law Minister also acknowledged ITAT’s pivotal contribution to India’s economic progress stating that the ITAT has played an integral role in establishing India’s position as the world’s fourth-largest economy through fair and timely resolution of tax disputes.

Chief Justice of India Justice B.R. Gavai, in his keynote address lauded ITAT’s significant role in India’s judicial system and appreciated its values of fairness, transparency and consistency in adjudication. He urged continuous efforts toward greater efficiency and modernization to meet the demands of an expanding economy and a dynamic tax environment.


The event also saw Dr. Anju Rathi Rana, Law Secretary, Department of Legal Affairs state that the ITAT symbolized fairness and reasoned decision-making. She further emphasized the Tribunal’s commitment to adopting technology-driven reforms and capacity-building initiatives.


The event was graced by Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, and witnessed participation from senior members of the Bar, government officials, academicians and law students.

Justice (Retd.) C.V. Bhadang, the President of ITAT welcomed the gathering and reiterated the Tribunal’s commitment to uphold the rule of law in taxation. An audio-visual presentation titled “84 Glorious Years of ITAT” showcased landmark rulings, milestones and the Tribunal’s evolution since its inception.

The event also featured addresses by other dignitaries including Ajay Wadhwa, President of the ITAT Tax Bar Association (New Delhi), Mahavir Singh, Vice-President (Delhi Zone), ITAT.


The symposium marked an ode to the lasting legacy of the ITAT and the presence of the Tribunal in sustaining the synergy among the judiciary, executive and legal fraternity in India’s tax dispute resolution system in the 84 years that it has been present.
