To improve access to justice, the Bombay High Court has officially declared Kolhapur as one of its locations for court hearings. Starting from August 18, 2025, judges and division benches of the Bombay High Court will begin hearing cases in Kolhapur.
The decision was announced in a government gazette notification dated August 1, 2025, and was signed by Chief Justice Alok Aradhe of the Bombay High Court.
The order was issued using the powers given under the States Reorganisation Act, 1956, with the approval of the Governor of Maharashtra.
Until now, people from Kolhapur and surrounding areas had to travel to Mumbai to attend hearings at the Bombay High Court. With this new development, it will become much easier for lawyers, litigants, and the general public to access the court’s services.

This move will definitely reduce the burden on the main court in Mumbai and help speed up the justice process. It will also save time and money for people from western Maharashtra who need to go to court.
This is also being seen as part of a larger effort to decentralize the justice system and bring legal services closer to the people. Many citizens and members of the legal community in Kolhapur have welcomed the decision.
The notification clearly states that from August 18, 2025, the High Court will start functioning in Kolhapur. The exact court premises and the types of cases to be heard there are expected to be announced soon by the court administration.
