Bosch Limited has informed the stock exchanges that it has received a huge customs duty demand from the Office of the Principal Commissioner of Customs (Import) at the Air Cargo Complex in New Delhi. The demand relates to the reclassification of oxygen sensors imported by the company. The order was received by Bosch on August 7, 2025.

According to Bosch, the customs authority has directed that the oxygen sensors, which were earlier classified under three different customs tariff codes, should now be placed under a new classification.

Originally, it was classified under code 9026 80 90 (Instruments and apparatus for measuring or checking the flow or level of liquids), 9027 10 00 (Gas or smoke analysis apparatus), and 9032 89 90 (Other automatic regulating or controlling instruments and apparatus).

The customs department now wants the goods to be classified under code 9031 80 00 (Other measuring or checking instruments, appliances and machines, not specified elsewhere). This change in classification resulted in a large demand for additional customs duty.

The total financial impact of this order is substantial. The customs department has demanded a differential duty of over 70.41 crore rupees. In addition to that, interest and penalty have been calculated at approximately 70.45 crore rupees. The total demand now stands at around 140.86 crore rupees, not including further interest that may apply.

The company said that it plans to challenge the order. The company will file an appeal before the Customs Excise and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal in Delhi. As part of this process, Bosch will make a mandatory pre-deposit of 7.5 percent of the disputed duty amount.
