Central Govt. Notifies Issue of ₹100 Coin to Commemorate Birth Centenary of the ‘Bard of Brahmaputra’ – Dr. Bhupen Hazarika

The Central Government has notified the issue of a ₹100 coin to commemorate the birth centenary of legendary singer and former Member of the Assam Legislative Assembly, Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. The Ministry of Finance, Department of Economic Affairs on 26 August, 2025 notified the issuance of the commemorative coin under the Coinage Act, 2011.

Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, fondly remembered as the “Bard of Brahmaputra” and “Sudhakantha,” was one of Assam’s most revered artists whose work transcended geographic and cultural boundaries. His songs, films and pieces of poetry embodied themes of humanity, social justice and cultural pride which deeply resonated with the people of Assam and beyond, leaving an indelible mark on the industries of music, cinema and literature.

During his lifetime, Dr. Hazarika was the recipient of numerous prestigious honours such as the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Shri. He was posthumously awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2012 and the Bharat Ratna in 2019.

The newly notified commemorative coin has been authorised under the Coinage (Issue of Commemorative Coin on the occasion of Birth Centenary of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika) Rules, 2025.

As per the notification, the coin will have a denomination of ₹100, and shall be circular in shape, with a diameter of 44 millimetres and bear 200 serrations. The composition is pure silver with 99.9 per cent purity, and the standard weight of the coin is fixed at 40 grams.

Like all Indian coins, the obverse side will carry the Lion Capitol of Ashoka Pillar at the centre with the inscription “सत्यमेव जयते” (Satyamev Jayate) beneath it. On the left periphery will be the word “भारत” (Bharat) in Devanagari script, and on the right periphery the word “INDIA” shall be inscribed in English. Below the Lion Capitol, the coin will bear the rupee symbol “₹” alongside the numeral “100.”

The reverse face of the coin shall be dedicated to Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, carrying his portrait at the centre with the inscription “डॉ. भूपेन हाजरिका की जन्म शताब्दी” on the upper periphery in Devanagari, while the lower periphery shall have the inscription “BIRTH CENTENARY OF DR. BHUPEN HAZARIKA” in English. The year “2025” will be engraved below the portrait in international numerals.

The issuance of the coin marks a lasting tribute to Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s endearing position as a cultural icon and marks a homage to his artistic contributions during the centenary year of his birth anniversary.
