Confident Group Chairman CJ Roy commits Suicide in Bengaluru: Pressures over Income Tax / ED Raid Linked

In a tragic occurrence, Confident Group chairman CJ Roy (Dr. Roy Chiriankandath Joseph) died by suicide at his corporate office in Bengaluru on Friday, January 30, 2026.
Preliminary news reports suggest that the Chairman took the extreme step amidst ongoing raids by the Income Tax and Enforcement Directorate (ED) Departments.
The news, which has sent shockwaves through India’s business and real estate circles, considering that Dr. Roy has been a towering personality in the industry.
The 57 year-old businessman reportedly went into a room inside his office to gather documents requested by investigators when he allegedly loaded his own gun and shot himself. He was later found seriously injured and rushed to Narayana Hospital in HSR Layout, but doctors were unable to save him.
Law enforcement officers have cordoned off the area and launched a detailed inquiry into the sequence of events surrounding the tragic act.
The raids at premises of the Confident Group have been linked to alleged irregularities linked to the company’s tax filings and financial dealings. The Confident Group was also allegedly involved in ongoing litigation before the Income TaxAppellate Tribunal (ITAT) and the Karnataka High Court in relation to the subject-matter.
While some reports suggest that the pressure of the raids may have contributed to the step, official authorities have not yet established a definitive motive.

CJ Roy was one of the most well-known figures in the real estate sector, particularly in Kerala and Bengaluru, where his group developed a wide range of residential and commercial projects.
Dr. Roy steered the Confident Group into a prominent real estate entity at a very early age, emerging as a titan in the regional industry.
Later spreading to hospitality and entertainment, the Confident Group has operations across India and international footprints in the Middle East.
Beyond real estate, CJ Roy also ventured into film production, backing major Malayalam films such as Casanovva and Ladies and Gentleman, starring Mohanlal.
Known for his flamboyant lifestyle, Roy often showcased his luxury car collection including a reported fleet of 11 Rolls-Royces and other high-end vehicles on social media, where he maintained a significant following.
