Trade data for May 2025 was issued by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, showing a good rise in India's merchandise trade balance and a notable increase in electronics exports. The nation's trade imbalance has decreased.

According to government sources, electronic goods exports soared 54.10% year-on-year, reaching $4.57 billion a key highlight of a month marked by resiliency in overseas shipments.

In May, total merchandise exports came to $38.73 billion, a tiny 2.2% decrease from the previous year, while imports decreased 1.8% to $60.61 billion. The goods trade deficit decreased to $21.88 billion as a result of the slowdown in both inbound and outbound shipments. Exports led by non-petroleum sectors especially electronics, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, marine products, and textiles have amassed the most momentum. In tandem, services exports showed robust expansion, estimated at $32.39 billion, while services imports were approximately $17.14 billion, leading to a services trade surplus of about $15 billion .

The electronic goods boom now visibly reflected in May’s 54.1% growth shows India’s evolving role as a global electronics manufacturing and export hub, spurred by initiatives like the PLI scheme. From mobile phones and consumer electronics to solar modules, India’s export basket is diversifying rapidly to meet surging global demand.

The reduced trade deficit provides diplomatic and financial room to expedite talks, particularly with allies like the US and the EU, while monitoring geopolitical obstacles, tariff policy patterns, and fluctuating commodity prices in the world economy.

In sum, while merchandise exports still face a slight year‑on‑year dip, strong electronics and services exports coupled with easing import costs have improved India’s trade dynamics in May 2025.
