Fresh technical concerns were flagged on the Goods and Services Tax (GST) portal after a Chartered Accountant highlighted inability to upload documents across several modules, briefly disrupting compliance-related processes during the evening of Tuesday, 16 December, 2025.

The issue was brought to public attention through a post on X (formerly Twitter) by Chartered Accountant Abhas Halakhandi, who alerted Infosys and the GST Network (GSTN) about difficulties in uploading documents on the GST portal.

Halakhandi stated that the problem pertained to multiple functions such as new registration applications, refund modules and other processes which required document uploads, effectively halting filings dependent on supporting documents.

The CA noted that the inability to upload documents had stalled multiple workflows on the portal, prompting a request for urgent resolution, tagging the official X handle at @Infosys_GSTN, the technology service provider responsible for developing and maintaining the GST portal infrastructure.

Subsequently, an account bearing the name of GST Support handle (@GforGST) responded to the issue, stating that the technical glitch had been resolved and advised users to retry uploading documents. However, this account has been positioned as a ‘commentary account’ and it is not certain under what capacity whether the GST Support handle is replying to aggrieved professionals on X.

Infosys has been maintaining the GST portal since the rollout of the indirect tax regime in July 2017. Over the years, tax professionals and businesses have periodically reported intermittent technical glitches, particularly during peak filing periods.

These have included return filing errors, difficulties in uploading annexures, auto-population mismatches, delayed reflection of credits and intermittent portal slowdowns. While several backend upgrades and system stabilisation measures have been deployed, professionals are often met with technical glitches from time to time.

Delays in filing and compliance often directly lead to broader structural challenges under the GST framework. One such issue frequently highlighted is the delayed full operationalisation of the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) across jurisdictions.

In the absence of functional appellate forums, several GST disputes are directly taken up by jurisdictional High Courts, which often grant interim reliefs or remand matters back to adjudicating authorities, further extending dispute resolution.

As GST compliance increasingly relies on a fully digital ecosystem, professionals continue to stress the importance of ensuring a stable system, timely communication during outages, and effective contingency measures to ensure that technical issues do not affect statutory compliance.
