TheInstitute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has granted a one-time relaxation window to its members for generating Unique Document IdentificationNumbers (UDINs) that were missed during the transition to the new UDIN portal.

The decision, announced by the UDIN Directorate on April 1, 2026, comes as a relief to professionals who faced technical challenges during the migration phase.

According to the notification, the relaxation specifically applies to documents and reports signed between October 22, 2025, and November 22, 2025. During this period, many members were unable to generate UDINs due to the shift from the old portal to the upgraded system. To address this gap, ICAI has permitted members to generate the missed UDINs between April 1, 2026, and April 30, 2026, both days inclusive.

The UDIN system, introduced by ICAI in 2019, is a mandatory requirement for practicing chartered accountants to authenticate documents and reports. Typically, members are required to generate UDINs within 60 days of signing a document. ICAI has clarified that this standard rule continues to apply for all documents outside the specified transition period.

The Council’s decision shows its commitment to supporting members during procedural transitions while maintaining the integrity of the UDIN framework. By offering this one-time relaxation, ICAI aims to balance compliance with practical challenges faced by professionals during the portal migration.

Members are advised to take advantage of this window promptly, as no further extensions have been announced. ICAI has also provided a dedicated email address (udin@icai.in ) for queries related to the relaxation, ensuring that members can seek clarifications and resolve issues efficiently.

This move is expected to ease compliance concerns for thousands of chartered accountants who were impacted by the portal transition.
