The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has formally announced the removal of several members from its Register of Members due to non‑payment of prescribed membership fees.

The notification, published in the Gazette of India, cites powers under Section 20(1)(c) of the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949, and Regulation 18 of the Chartered Accountants Regulations, 1988.

According to the announcement, the removal is effective from November 1, 2023, impacting a large number of Chartered Accountants across the country. Each entry in the notification lists the Membership Registration Number (MRN) and the name of the member whose membership has been cancelled.

The Register of Members is the statutory record of professionals authorized to practice as Chartered Accountants in India.

Removal from this register means that the individuals concerned lose their professional recognition and cannot practice under ICAI’s banner until reinstated. Reinstatement requires clearing outstanding dues and applying afresh for membership.

With over 1,400 members removed, ICAI has reinforced that non‑payment of fees is a serious lapse, carrying the ultimate penalty of exclusion from the profession’s official register.
