The Income Tax Department has launched a major compliance drive, issuing notices to dozens of senior executives earning more than ₹50 lakh annually. The notices allege misuse of exemptions such as House Rent Allowance (HRA) and Leave Travel Allowance (LTA), alongside underreporting of income from stock-linked compensation and undisclosed foreign assets.

Several executives reportedly claimed inflated HRA and LTA deductions despite high salaries and company-provided benefits. Authorities flagged cases of property purchased in the name of spouses or minors, as well as crypto assets received from foreign clients.

Some executives claimed deductions for donations made to unrecognized political entities, and underreporting of stock-linked gains and bonuses was another recurring anomaly.

In the last two years,s 99,000 taxpayers disclosed foreign assets. For AY 2025-26, 15 lakh taxpayers revised their returns, reflecting heightened scrutiny. The current notices focus on executives across hospitality, fast-moving consumer goods, engineering, construction, and startup sectors, signaling a cross-industry sweep.

Regulatory Approach

The notices serve as a pre-penalty warning, allowing executives to rectify anomalies before punitive measures are imposed. Tax experts note that this step reflects the government’s intent to strengthen compliance among high-income earners, ensuring parity with middle-income taxpayers who face stricter enforcement.

The move is expected to spark debate on tax fairness, as wealthy individuals are increasingly held accountable for aggressive tax planning.

What are House Rent Allowance (HRA) and Leave Travel Allowance (LTA)

HRA stands for House Rent Allowance, which helps cover your rental costs, while LTA means Leave Travel Allowance, which is given to cover expenses related to domestic travel. Both are part of your salary package, along with other components such as Basic Pay, Medical, Conveyance, and Professional Tax.
