Tax professionals, practitioners and filers have taken to X to highlight the struggles faced by them while trying to file their returns ahead of the September 15, 2025 deadline.

The Income Tax e-filing portal has reportedly been blocking returns that claim deductions under Sections 54 and 54F for immovable property bought in FY 2024–25, an error publicised on X by practitioner Mayank Mohanka (@MohankaMayank), who posted a screenshot of a “Category of Defect A” message requiring Capital Gains Accounts Scheme (CGAS) bank-account details even where no CGAS account was necessary.

The Income Tax India replied on X asking Mohanka to share his details via orm@cpc.incometax.gov.in for targeted assistance and Mohanka later reported the issue resolved.

Other taxpayers and advisers amplified complaints on X about login failures, AIS/Form-26AS mismatches and stalled processing accounts, delays and validation errors. The department remained responsive, directing users to share PAN and mobile details, to email cmcpc_support@insight.gov.in or orm@cpc.incometax.gov.in, and to use the AIS/TIS helpdesk and toll-free number 1800-103-4215 for escalation.

Extensions Every Year

Recent trends show that tax practitioners are calling for extensions every year, and for good reason. They point out that if the Income Tax utilities were released on time, practitioners would never require extensions. However, final ITR utilities are often released late, leaving taxpayers and professionals with an unreasonably short period to prepare and file returns.

One widely shared poster on social media states that taxpayers are not asking for a favour, but for a fair and practical timeline that would reduce last-minute rush, improves accuracy of returns and ensures better compliance. When delays stem from the system itself, it becomes imperative for the government to grant extensions in the interest of justice and smooth compliance.

The surge in platform complaints has fed formal calls from tax professionals and CA groups for deadline relief amid systemic changes to ITR forms, audit report formats, portal glitches and technical hitches.

The demand has also taken the shape of a trending campaign on X, with the hashtag #Extend_Due_Date_Immediately gaining strong momentum. On 7 September, CA Ruchita Vaghani (@R_N_Vaghani) pointed out that more than 6,000 tweets had already been posted on the subject, reflecting the mood of the taxpayer.
