The Ministry of Law and Justice has formally re-appointed senior law officers as Additional Solicitor Generals (ASGs) for the High Courts of Calcutta and Jharkhand in notifications dated July 15, 2025.

The Gazette notification, extends the term of seasoned advocates Asok Kumar Chakrabarti and Anil Kumar to continue representing the Union of India in their respective jurisdictions.

Asok Kumar Chakrabarti has been re-appointed as ASG for the Calcutta High Court for one year commencing from July 9, 2025. Chakrabarti has been serving in this role since July 9, 2022 when he was first designated by President Ram Nath Kovind for a three-year term.

A prominent Calcutta-based senior, Advocate Chakrabarti has appeared for the Union in high-profile matters, including representing the Central Bureau of Investigation before the Calcutta High Court in a matter concerning objectionable social media posts following the RG Kar hospital rape-murder case.

Meanwhile, Advocate Anil Kumar has received a three-month extension as ASG in the High Court of Jharkhand, effective from August 1, 2025 to October 2025 or until further orders.

Advocate Kumar became the first ASG for Jharkhand High Court on July 11, 2022 following a government notification.

Both re-appointments are conditional “or until further orders” as specified in the notification and are indicative of the Union’s intent to sustain the services of experienced advocates to represent it before constitutional benches of the jurisdictional high courts.
