Due to a discrepancy in the date of birth (DOB) listed on the two documents, thousands of Indian taxpayers face an issue while trying to connect their Permanent Account Number (PAN) with Aadhaar.

It is now important for many to resolve these discrepancies because the Income Tax Department has made the PAN-Aadhaar linking mandatory and there is a risk that PAN would become inactive for failure to comply.

What Causes the Failure of the PAN-Aadhaar Link?

The primary cause of PAN-Aadhaar connection request failures, according to the Income Tax Department, is demographic mismatches, specifically in name, date of birth, or gender. Successful connection can be thwarted by even a small discrepancy in the DOB (for instance, one digit or a different format). The reason for this is that the system demands that the information on both documents be similar.

Step-by-Step Guidance to Resolve Date of Birth Mismatch

The following actions are advised by the Income Tax Department if a DOB discrepancy has prevented your PAN-Aadhaar linking:

1. Find out which record is incorrect: To start, find out where the DOB discrepancy is by looking through your Aadhaar and PAN information.

2. Correct the Mistaken Document: Update your information on the UTIITSL website or the NSDL e-Gov portal if the issue is in your PAN. Select "PAN correction" and send in Form 49A along with the necessary paperwork. You will receive an acknowledgment sheet to track your application after submitting it and paying for it.

Go to the UIDAI website if your Aadhaar contains the error. Enter your Aadhaar number and OTP to log in, choose to amend your date of birth, and attach the required documentation (such as a passport or birth certificate). Note the Update Request Number (URN) for tracking when you submit your request.

3. Try Linking Again: Use the Income Tax e-filing portal to try the PAN-Aadhaar connection once more when the correction has been processed and your information matches.

LINKING STILL NOT WORKING AFTER CORRECTIONS?

When the linking still does not work even after correcting the details, you can employ biometric-based authentication at specific locations operated by PAN service providers (Protean or UTIITSL) if the linkage still doesn't work after updating. Keep your evidence of fee payment, Aadhaar, and PAN with you. This service comes with a small fee, usually around Rs 50. If there are recurring small demographic mismatches that cannot be fixed by online updates, biometric authentication can help.

Important Deadlines and Penalties

There are strict deadlines for PAN-Aadhaar connection set by the Income Tax Department. Your PAN may become inactive if you miss the deadline, which may affect your capacity to submit returns or carry out high-value transactions. Additionally, there is a 1,000 rupee late fee for joining after the deadline.

A Pan holder, vide raised the issue of Aadhar - PAN mismatch. He says that there is no difference in the date of birth given in both documents, but it still shows error. For this query the income tax department replied that “In case of Name/DOB/Gender mismatch while linking PAN with Aadhaar, you can avail the facility of biometric authentication at the dedicated centers of PAN service providers.”
