The Central Government, exercising its authority under Section 16 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016, and after due consultation with the Bureau of Indian Standards, has issued a pivotal order, vide no. S.O. 4646(E) on 25th October 2023 in the public interest. This order, titled the “Door Fittings (Quality Control) Order, 2023,” is set to take effect six months from its publication in the Official Gazette.

Under this order, various goods and articles, as outlined in Column (1) of the accompanying table, are required to adhere to the corresponding Indian Standard cited in Column (2) of the same table. Furthermore, they must display the Standard Mark, obtained through a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards, in accordance with Scheme-1 of Schedule-II of the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018. It’s noteworthy that this order does not pertain to items produced domestically for the purpose of export.

The implementation is in a way that, for micro-enterprises, as defined in clause (h) and (m) of section 2 of the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006, the order will take effect twelve months from its publication in the Official Gazette. As for small enterprises, also defined in the same clause, the order will be enforced nine months from the date of publication.

Any individual or entity found to be in violation of the provisions of this order will be subject to legal consequences in accordance with the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016. This significant measure by the Central Government is designed to bolster consumer safety and product quality, ensuring that door fittings in India meet stringent standards.
