Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the chief minister of Himachal Pradesh and the minister in charge of finances, introduced a bill in the state assembly to change the taxation of products transported by roads by eliminating the provision that imposes a tax based on the distance traveled.

According to him, the parent act from 1999 was passed in order to legitimize some taxes levied on commodities transported by road in the State and to address a number of other issues related to them.

The distance element is being removed so that the tax may be assessed at uniform rates, disregarding the distance traveled, thus according to the Chief Minister, who said that the adjustment was required to make the taxing process simpler for the stakeholders.

Additionally, the Chief Minister introduced other legislation to add clauses and amend the HP GST Act to impose taxes on wagering, casinos, gambling, horse racing, lotteries, and online gaming.

The minister stated that the Himachal Pradesh Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017, was amended shortly after the central government amended the Central Goods and Services Tax Act of 2017 to provide uniformity throughout the nation.

After lunch on Thursday, the Chief Minister introduced the Himachal Pradesh Taxation Amendment (on Certain Goods Carried by Road) Act, 2023, in the state assembly.
