In a significant move towards ensuring accuracy and standardisation in length measurement instruments, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry has issued a notification, S.O. 5029(E), on 23rd November 2023, introducing the Legal Metrology- Material Measures of Length (Quality Control) Order, 2023.

The newly notified order, set to come into effect six months from its publication in the Official Gazette, mandates that goods or articles listed in the order must adhere to the corresponding Indian Standard specified in the provided Table. Additionally, these items should bear the Standard Mark, obtained through a license from the Bureau as per Scheme-1 of Schedule-II of the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.

It’s worth noting that this order excludes goods or articles manufactured domestically for export.

Moreover, for micro-enterprises and small enterprises, as defined by the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006, the order’s enforcement will be staggered. Micro-enterprises will be subject to the order twelve months from the date of publication, while small enterprises will come under its purview after nine months.

This regulatory development aims to enhance the quality and precision of length measurement instruments, promoting industry compliance and consumer confidence.

Any person who contravenes the provisions of this Order shall be punishable under the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.
