Supreme Court Collegium recommends Elevation of 3 High Court Judges to the Apex Court

The Collegium of the Supreme Court of India recently recommended the elevation of three distinguished High Court judges to fill up the vacancies within the judges’ roster of the Supreme Court of India.

The recommendations were made by the Collegium headed by current Chief Justice of India BR Gavai, following a meeting of its five-member body convened to consider appointments necessitated by the recent retirement of former Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice A S Oka.

A third vacancy is set to arise with the impending retirement of Justice Bela M Trivedi, whose last working day was on May 15, though her formal date of retirement falls on June 9. With a sanctioned strength of thirty-four, the Supreme Court was functioning with only thirty-two judges after the aforementioned retirements.

The Collegium has recommended Justice NV Anjaria, currently Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, Justice Vijay Bishnoi, the present Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, and Justice Atul S Chandurkar, a judge of the Bombay High Court, for elevation to the apex court.

Justice Anjaria, who began his legal career in 1988, has served as standing counsel for several state bodies and was appointed a judge of the Gujarat High Court before assuming his present role in Karnataka earlier this year.

Justice Vijay Bishnoi enrolled as an advocate in 1989, practiced in Rajasthan, represented multiple government departments, and served as a judge of the Rajasthan High Court before his appointment as Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court in February 2024.

Justice Atul S Chandurkar began his legal practice in 1988, shifted to Nagpur in 1992, and was appointed a judge of the Bombay High Court in 2013. He is also an author of two books on Maharashtra local laws.

Once the recommendations are approved and notified, the incoming judges shall fill the vacancies created by recent and upcoming retirements, and restore the Supreme Court to near its full strength.
